The Linking Varbs

Linking Verbs হচ্ছে সংযোগ স্থাপনকারী ক্রিয়া।এরা কোন Action বা কাজ নির্দেশ করে না।অর্থাৎ যেসব verb কোন কার্য ‍নির্দেশ না করে তার Subject এর সাথে Predicate (Subject সম্পর্কে যা কিছু বলা হয় তাকে  Predicate বলে) এর সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে তাদেরকে  Linking verb বলে।যেমন: to be verbs (am, is, are, was, were, shall be, will be, have been, has been, can be, may be), become, appear, seem ইত্যাদি হচ্ছে সবচেয়ে common linking verbs এর উদাহরণ।
Examples:
He       is            a thief
Sub + Lin.v + Pred.
Mr.john  is     president.
She        seemed       nervous.
Types of Linking verbs: Linking verb গুলোকে নিম্নলিখিতভাবে ভাগ করা যায়।যেমন:

1. Common Linking Verbs:

Example:
He       is           a doctor.
Sub.         Lin.V.    Pred.
You should be a teacher.
He has become a judge.
Joy appeared Happy.

1. Sensory Linking Verb: (Sensory linking verb গুলো শুধুমাত্র তখনই Linking verb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় যখন  sentence এ কোন action উল্লেথ থাকে না)।যেমন: Feel, Look, Smell, Sound, Taste

Examples:
Honey    tastes    sweet
Sub                   Lin.v.      Pred
The sun felt hot.
The cake looked delieious.
Note: Sensory Linking verb গুলো মাঝে মাঝে Action verb হিসেবেও ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে।
Examples:
Jony tasted the delicious cake.
He smelled the sweet flower.
I looked at the window.
উপরিউক্ত Sentence গুলোতে taste, smell. Look ইত্যাদি linking verb নয়।এখানে এগুলো action verb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। কারণ verb গুলো যথাক্রমে ‘the delicious’, ‘the sweet flower’ ‘at the window’ ইত্যাদিকে direct object রূপে গ্রহণ করেছে।মনে রাখুন, to be verbs, become এবং seem সর্বদাই Linking verb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

1. Less Common Linking Verb: Grow, Remain, Prove, Stay

 Examples:
She        grows          prettier        everyday.
Sub          Lin.v.             Pred.
The test proved too difficult for most of the students in the Class.
He remains the generous man.
The room stays cool for short period.
The phrasal Verbs
Verb + asverbial particle যদি একটি unique অর্থ দেয় যা isiomatic বা non-idiomatic হতে পারে তবে তাকে phrasal verb বলে।
Examples:
Turn একটি verb যার অর্থ ঘোরানো বা মোড় নেওয়া। এর সাথে on, off, up, down, প্রভৃতি adverbial particle বসালে তাদের এরূপ অর্থ হয়-
Turn on = (সুইচ) অন করা
Turn off = (সুইচ) বন্ধ করা
Turn up = বাড়িয়ে দেওয়া
Turn down = কমিয়ে দেওয়া
Turn on the computer.
Phrasal verb – Transitive এবং Intransitive হতে পারে।
Transitive Phrasal Verb:
Examples:
They set up a school last year.
Turn down the fan.
Intransitive Phrasal verb:
All the students sat down.
He gets up at 6 am.
The fence broke down.
